EASTGATE PARK
Eastgate Park was built by county and volunteer labor in 2006 to create a unique visualization of Terrell County history and pre-history. The artistic work was designed and masterfully executed by local resident Leo Smith, Sr., with the assistance of his wife Barbara. Depicting life in Terrell County, from its earliest inhabitants to the arrival of Anglo and Hispanic settlers and the railroad, the rich imagery tells the story in media easily understood by young and old alike. Much of the prehistoric symbology is a a faithful recreation of wall paintings found in area caves and rock shelters. Beginning with the earliest “cave dweller” types, each obelisk takes a snapshot of the successive cultures as they moved through the area and into history. The artist’s craftsmanship throughout faithfully depicts the geography, flora and fauna of the area, in an accurate historical context. The last stone represents the cowboy culture, which is very much alive to this day. Eastgate Park is worthy of the pride Terrell County residents feel towards it. We are greatly indebted to the Smiths and all those who helped bring this unique work of art to life.
